"Mom, Zach and I are going out bike riding!" Sandy shouts up
the stairs.
"Be careful and be home in
time for dinner," her mother called back. She was
happy that Sandy and Zach were going for some exercise on on
this beautiful spring day in Cloverleaf Corners.
Sandy climbed onto her pretty
pink trike while Zach pushed his yellow one down the
driveway. The trikes had been Christmas presents.
They had waited all winter for a chance to ride them.
"Let's go down to Main
Street," Zach called to his sister as she pedaled her way
down the sidewalk. "I want to go to the sporting goods
store. I would really like a new tennis racket."
"Oh, Zach," Sandy sighed.
"We just got new bikes. We're not going to get new
tennis rackets, too!"
As they approached the
corner, they got off their trikes so they could walk them
across the street.
"Don't forget to look both
ways before you cross," Sandy reminded Zach.
"Can someone help me?" a
voice called from behind the tall hedge that lined the
street.
"Who needs help?" exclaimed
Sandy, with curiosity. Zach pushed the hedges apart
and climbed into the yard of the Billabongs.
There was Mrs. Matilda
Billabong lying on the ground!
"I fell off the step ladder
and I hurt my arm," Mrs. Billabong said. "Can you help
me up? Perhaps I can walk over to see Dr. Murdock. His
office is just down the road."
Zach quickly helped poor Mrs.
Billabong onto her feet.
"Oh, dear," she sighed.
I hope I didn't break anything."
"Step onto the back of my
trike and I'll bring you over to Dr. Murdock's," Sandy
volunteered.
Mrs. Billabong was greatly
relieved. "Thanks so much, children. I'm so glad
you rode by."
By the time Sandy and Zach
delivered Mrs. Billabong to Dr. Murdock's office, it was
already time to turn back home for dinner.
"Well, we didn't get to go
downtown, but we sure had an adventure," Sandy said to Zach.
The very next morning, while
Sandy and Zach were eating their breakfast, the door bell
rang.
"I'll get it!" cried Zach,
though Sandy was right as his heels.
When they opened the door,
there stood Mrs. Billabong with her arm in a sling.
"Luckily I didn't break
anything. I don't know what I would have done if you
had not ridden by. I would like to give you both a
present."
Mrs. Billabong presented Zach
and Sandy with 2 brand new shin tennis rackets.
"Just what we wanted, thank
you!" shouted Zach and Sandy together, as they jumped up and
down.
All summer Zach and Sandy
could be seen in Cloverleaf Corners pedaling to the tennis
courts with their brand new rackets.
